Old WildcatCorner

I made the claim in the “About Us” section of the site that WildcatCorner may very well be the first ever Kentucky athletic blog.  Later, I went on to find what I think is the first version of the website with the first few posts.  Well, thanks to a fabulous website called archive.org, I’ve found more old versions of the site that I have been looking for for awhile.  I’ve attempted to collect all of the old posts, but I know I’m missing a few from one version of the site since it wasn’t formatted well.  I hope to add those later on.

For now, here are posts ranging from 2.11.03 through 12.2.06.  They refer to links that are no longer linked, so ignore those.  Maybe I’ll get around to linking them later.  But it took me this long to post my archives, so don’t hold your breath.

General UK NewsYou may or may not have noticed, but a lot of the sites offering “insider” information are actually just rehashing news, or posting links to articles that are available for free. So with that in mind, I have decided to implement a new feature. Every few days, I will post links to articles I find interesting or think other readers may find interesting. If I see breaking news on another site, I will post it as soon as I can. To begin, here a few articles about Kentucky basketball. So here you go, enjoy your free “insider” information.

General UK NewsThe only thing to talk about here is Randolph Morris. Although still apparently somewhat lazy, Morris simply abused Hansbrough. There was no stopping him. Randolph scored 23 points, hitting 11 of his 12 shots. A few more looks for Morris and this game could come down to the wire. I would feel better if he would toss a couple out for open 3′s, but seeing how often UK makes open 3′s, he was right in his selfishness. Now, if only the rest of the team would catch up to Morris, this could be a special year.

Recap.

General UK NewsI admit, at the time of this writing there is still 7 minutes left in the game. However, Kentucky is letting Memphis have lay ups and dunks at will. The game was over early in the second half. I’m not saying Memphis is a better team. Kentucky was just horrible today, plain and simple. There was too much dribbling, too much one-on-one, and too many bad shots down low. Sure it’s a good idea to go down to Morris, however the idea should be to kick the thing out every once in a while.

General UK NewsUK got down big in the 1st half, but fought their way back against UCLA. However, bad decisions and hurried shots cost UK the game as they lost 73-68. They are showing promise however. Jasper seems to be proving himself to be the point guard of the future… maybe even the point guard the time SEC play rolls around. It’s too early to say, however. Crawford led the team with 16 points and Jasper pitched in 10 in the loss.

Clash of the Cats
Posted by Al on March 19, 2005
Cincinnati and fans wanted the game against UK, Cincinnati and fans got the game with UK… Cincinnati and fans also got a loss from UK.  It had been 14 years since the two teams last met, and Cincinnati fans had this theory that UK was afraid to play the Bearcats.  Maybe it was true.  But UK won when it mattered.

Randolph Morris earned a double-double by scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds below, and above the rim, on the way to the 69-60 victory.  Kelenna Azubuike led the team, again, with 19 points.  Rajon Rondo, who is really stepping up lately, drained a couple of 3′s on his way to 16 points.  The most amazing number was that the bench, in 46 total minutes, scored only 2 points.  Those 2 points came from a nice “in your face” type slam from Shagari.

Kentucky will play Utah next.  We all know how the last few games have gone against Rick Majerus and the Utes.  However, Rick isn’t there anymore.  This game will by no means be an easy walk to the Elite 8.  Hopefully the Cats will not be looking for help from history, and will play with the heart and grittiness they played with today.  Great game, and congratulations on the trip to the Sweet 16.  Box score.  Recap.

Kentucky Survives Scare
Posted by Al on March 17, 2005
Eastern Kentucky put up a fight, but Kentucky was ultimately too much.  However, Kentucky continues to play uninspired basketball and may face a rude awakening on Saturday when they face either Iowa or Cincinnati.  One bright spot of this game was Rondo’s free-throw shooting.  He hit 6 of 6 free-throws, and scored 12 points in the win.  Both Azubuike and Hayes scored 16 points.  Kentucky won, 72-64.  Box score.  Recap.

Kentucky Gets a #2 Seed
Posted by Al on March 13, 2005
All I have to say to the Louisville fans thinking they had a #1 is, HAH!  Kentucky gets a #2 seed and will be playing Eastern Kentucky in the 1st round.  There’s a potential problem in the 2nd round with Kentucky potentially have to face Cincinnati.  I guess everyone knows UK’s troubles with CUSA teams as of late.  They took care of LOUISVILLE in their OWN house though.  This should be fun.

Florida Beats UK
Posted by Al on March 13, 2005
You know what’s the worst thing about this loss?  It’s not that Florida won.  It’s not that Kentucky doesn’t get that all important 26th SEC Title (I’m ok with the 25 they have now)… it’s having to listen to Louisville fans who, by their twisted, messed up logic, think Louisville is better than UK, and more deserving of a #1 seed.  I’ll go ahead and say it, I hate the *typical* Louisville fan. The typical fan in my opinion is the one who says they are so superior, but is actually jealous of what UK accomplishes year after year.  The rational Louisville fan, although scientist have yet to find one, is OK in my book.

On to the game.  Well, it wasn’t much of an effort.  If they put forth this lackadaisical play in the NCAA Tournament, they’re looking at a second round loss again.  It didn’t make much of a difference, but the officiating was horrible early on.  The play I’m referring to is when Lee, I believe it was, slung Rondo to the floor, DDTing him.  If Lee would have just stood there with his hands on the ball I would agree 100% it was a jump ball.  However, he appeared to maliciously throw Rondo to the floor.  The play, however, had no impact on the game and luckily Rondo wasn’t injured.

Azubuike led the Cats with 17 points.  He was the only bright spot of the game.  Box score.  Recap.

Kentucky Defeats Tennessee/Faces LSU Tonight
Posted by Al on March 11, 2005
Kentucky came out on fire tonight, completely dominating the game.  A big slam by Azubuike (18 points), a between the legs pass from Sparks (16 points), and Tom Hardwick were just some of the first half highlights.  The Cats cooled off in the second half, letting UT climb back in it.  But, ultimately, Kentucky was just too much for the Vols and won the game, 76-62.

UK will be facing LSU tonight.  They defeated LSU when they played in Rupp, 89-58.  Box score.  Recap.

On a side note, now that Tubby is allowing the Freshman to talk to the media, Joe Crawford says he will be staying at Kentucky.  If this is the case, he is making probably the smartest move of his career.  Good luck, Joe.  Kentucky.com article.

Kentucky Finishes at #4
Posted by Al on March 7, 2005
So, I haven’t posted in awhile.  I’m sure you know what has happened between the Mississippi State game and now.  Anyway, Kentucky finished the season ranked at #4 in both polls.  If the Cats can run the SEC Tournament, I believe they can still obtain a #1 seed.  Running the table would give them the momentum they need to go deep into the NCAA Tournament.  Excellent regular season Cats.  Good luck in the SEC Tournament against Tennessee or Arkansas.

Kentucky Rebounds to Beat Miss. State
Posted by Al on February 20, 2005
After the humiliating loss against South Carolina the other night, Kentucky came out ready to play.  They finally were able to put 2 good halves together to destroy Mississippi State 94-78.  Randolph Morris led the team with 17 points before fouling out.  Kelenna Azubuike added 15, and Patrick Sparks pitched in 14 hitting 4 of 9 3′s and hitting a crazy looking over the head lay-up on an assist from Morris.  Overall, Kentucky shot 45.8% from the field and 70.4% from the free-throw line.  Kentucky played up to expectation last night.  If they can keep playing this well, a lot of people will be eating their “early exit” words.  Box score and recap.

Cats Stink it up at South Carolina
Posted by Al on February 15, 2005
I didn’t post an update last week because I didn’t feel like it after their pathetic play.  Conversely, their play was so pathetic this week I had to post something.  Asinine passes, lazy defense… it was like watching Louisville play Memphis.  Ok, it wasn’t that pathetic, but it wasn’t far off.  I wonder if they can use this week to grow as a team and come back from an embarrassing loss to defeat Mississippi State next weekend.  If the play is this lethargic next week, they will not stand a chance.  Anyway, Cats lose 73-61.

Cats “Scratch and Claw”, Beat Florida
Posted by Al on February 08, 2005
It was a rough game, with Florida having a 7 point half time lead.  But Kentucky showed why they’re Kentucky, and came back to win the game 69-66.  The referees were out in full force for this game, seemingly picking on Rondo.  Rondo absolutely broke a Florida players ankles, when he did a very clean looking crossover… but was called for carrying the ball.  This didn’t make Rondo very happy.  In fact, it appeared to anger him a little.  He came back on the other end and fouled Roberson hard when he attempted to block a shot.  Roberson took exception to this and starting jawing at Rondo.  Rondo didn’t back down and started jawing back.  Rajon was singled out of this little altercation and got an ear full from the ref.  I think that just gave Rondo even more fire, because soon after, he stepped in to steal a pass and threw down a wide open dunk.  He finished with 14 points and 4 assists.  He also hit 8 of 10 free throws.

Kelenna Azubuike led the team with 18 points on 7 of 11 shooting.  Chuck Hayes and Randolph Morris each added 11.  Hayes hit couple of big free throws in the closing seconds to help seal the victory.

Kentucky improves to 18-2 on the season and 9-0 in the SEC.  This win gives Kentucky a 3 game lead in the SEC East and over the Florida Gators.  They have a 2 game lead overall and over the Alabama Crimson Tide.

This wasn’t the best looking game, but it was a win.  It keeps showing that Kentucky can come back and can win the close games.  Box score and recap.

Kentucky Wins Seventh Straight
Posted by Al on February 05, 2005
Kentucky easily won their seventh straight game 84-70 to go 8-0 in the SEC.  Azubuike, Hayes, and Sparks each had 15 points in the win.  Hayes also had 13 rebounds.  Rondo, continuing his impressive play, added 12 points.  Kentucky shot 49.2% from the field, and 47.1% from 3.  The Cats are still struggling with free throws, hitting only 63.6%.  Overall, this was a very well played game.  Kentucky will need to continue its hot play Tuesday against Florida, who recently thoroughly destroyed Alabama.  Box score and recap.

Louisville Fans
Posted by Al on February 01, 2005
Let me start by saying not all UL fans are this way, and every team has its nut jobs (even UK).  That is my disclaimer.

Now, for a little controversial article…  Louisville has to have the most fans in denial.  The ones I have had experience with believe that even though Louisville blew a 16 point lead to Kentucky, and lost by a point in the closing seconds, they are a better team than UK, hands down.  They are always comparing UL players to UK players.   I guess this is where the “Little Brother” comes in.  They obviously have an inferiority complex.

One fairly well-known message board has gone as far as to have a “Rivalry” board.  Sure, it says it includes other teams such as Cincinnati, and Marquette, but the majority of the posts are about UK.  Even though it has been over a month since the game has been played.  They just can’t seem to let it go.  Sure Sparks walked, but rewind the tape a little and notice the bogus “blocking call”, or go even further and see Myles walk when he puts UL ahead in the 1st half.  Get OVER it already!

Included in the excuse threads, they must post about every single UK game, and complain about how they are “overrated” and “lucky” to get wins.  Then they continue to spout off about how “racist” and critical UK fans are.  How ALL UK fans hate Tubby and are calling for his job after a loss.  All the while never making a decent argument.  They think it makes sense, but if you saw the arguments, you would be shaking your head.

My favorite is when they say UK fans do this and that, but UL fans are angels.  One post recently mentioned, and this comes from one of their “reputable” posters, that the negative posts concerning Pitino are just fly-by posters who aren’t really Louisville fans.  In fact, they are probably UK fans that are so jealous of Pitino being at Louisville, that they’ll go as far as posing as UL fans to post negative comments to attempt getting a mutiny started.  And, of course, all of the negative posts from UK fans are OBVIOUSLY real UK fans.  They can’t fathom a UL fan posing as a UK fan to start trouble.  I wonder what Freud would think about this?

Another favorite UL argument to UK fans is “stop living in the past!”  Then they go on to say in the next sentence that Louisville has beaten Kentucky so many times in “recent” history or something.  I’m usually laughing so hard by this point that I cant concentrate.  Of course, when a UK fan would bring up “60-58″, they would again start with the “living in the past” arsenal.  One month is apparently so far in the past, that it shouldn’t even be considered.  So, which is it?  Past or no past?

Well, that’s enough for now.  I’m sure I will get more arsenal from UL fans in the coming weeks.

UK Holds Off Arkansas
Posted by Al on January 29, 2005
It was a tight one, but Kentucky came away from Arkansas with a 68-67 win.  Patrick Sparks hit a huge shot with 24 seconds left to seal the win for the Cats.  Arkansas missed a 3 at the buzzer that would have given them the win.  Azubuike had 13 points and Rajon Rondo added 12 in the victory.  Excellent win on the road, Cats.  Keep it up.  Box score and recap.

Hayes is Day-To-Day
Posted by Al on January 26, 2005
From UKAthletics.com, Chuck Hayes is listed day-to-day, and will be fitted for a protective mask.  The game Saturday is still up in the air, but I look for Chuck to at least start, keeping his consecutive game streak alive.

#6 Kentucky Defeats Tennessee 84-62
Posted by Al on January 25, 2005
The only bad thing that came out of this game was Chuck’s broken nose.  Hopefully he’ll be fitted for a mask and be ready to compete in the next game at Arkansas.  Sparks led the team with 19 points and Azubuike added 17.  Box score and recap.

Kentucky Destroys LSU, 89-58
Posted by Al on January 22, 2005
The Wildcats were on fire last night, shooting 54.2% from the field, and 77.8% from the free-throw line.  Patrick Sparks hit 5 of 7 3-pointers and finished with 15 points.  Azubuike led the team with 16.  UK is looking a lot better and can hopefully keep it up against the University of Tennessee this Tuesday night.  Box score and recap.

Kentucky Barely Beats Ole Miss, 53-50
Posted by Al on January 19, 2005
The Wildcats had trouble with Ole Miss, trailing 29-16 at the half.  But thanks to a couple of spurts, Kentucky was able to climb back in it and edge out the win.  It wasn’t looking good, but Rondo started to drive in the 2nd half and scored 11 of his game high 13 points.  Overall, it was ugly, but it was a win.  Recap.  Box score.

Joe Crawford is back in Lexington and he WILL be rejoining the Kentucky Wildcats basketball team.  I do not have a doubt in my mind that he is in for the long haul, because if some people (mainly Tubby Smith) thought he was here just for eligibility, he would never step foot in Rupp again.  Welcome back Joe, you made a wise choice.  Not just from the UK fan point of view, but for your career.

Kentucky Dominates Georgia 76-55
Posted by Al on January 15, 2005
The Kentucky Wildcats had no problem with Georgia Bulldogs today, easily defeating them 76-55.  Patrick Sparks scored 15, and Chuck Hayes had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.  Kentucky had a huge rebounding edge with 44 to Georgia’s 18.  UK is now 3-0 in SEC play while Georgia drops to 0-4.  Box score and recap.

Early reports are that Joe Crawford is heading back to Lexington and will return after the team has left for the UGA game.  The question remains, if this is in fact true, is he returning to be a part of the basketball team or to get his eligibility back?  And will Tubby allow him to return to the team?  Hopefully we’ll find out soon.

Crawford May Transfer
Posted by Al on January 10, 2005
Well, it seems as though everyone is reporting that Joe Crawford may make the decision to transfer.  That would be a loss for UK, and a loss for Crawford.  This is just speculation, but it seems he is upset about his playing time.  Crawford should think about this decision long and hard.  Either transfer and lose a year of eligibility, not playing basketball against competition (barring a transfer to junior college), or stay at Kentucky, use that same year to develop more as a player and learn from one of the best.  I personally think he should stay because I feel he will benefit more, in time, from UK.  But, if he wants to go, all I can say is have fun and I hope you don’t regret it.

Tubby Gets 200th Win at UK

Tubby Smith got his 200th win at UK tonight, and it was a blowout… in the first half.  Kentucky held Campbell to only 11 points in the 1st half.  That didn’t last long with Campbell outscoring Kentucky 39-37 in the second half.  The 1st half was amazing, the second almost too hard to watch.  Randolph Morris had 25 points in 23 minutes.  Box Score and recap.

Ok, so I’m REALLY late posting this.  I’ve been moving and haven’t had access to the website.  Anyway, Kentucky defeated Louisville 60-58, after coming back from a 16 point 2nd half deficit.  This comeback matches their largest comeback in school history, tying the Mardis Gras Miracle game.  Patrick Sparks laid it to the Cards, scoring 25 points overall with 12 of them coming in a row in the 2nd half to get the Cats back in the game.  Read a recap at UK Athletics.com.  Box score.

Poor Davis
Posted by Al on December 11, 2004
Mike Davis has never beaten Kentucky (I don’t know if he’s even beaten Tubby), and he won’t do it this year.  Kentucky defeated Indiana today, 73-58 in Freedom Hall.  This was the 10th win in 11 times against the Hoosiers.  Patrick Sparks had 16 points for the Cats, and Chuck Hayes had 14.  But the biggest impact today was probably made my Shagari Alleyne.   Shagari had 10 points, 4 blocks, and altered a ton of shots.  His play has come around as of late, and he is showing his potential just in time.  Kentucky will play hated rival Louisville this Saturday at Freedom Hall.  Shagari will need to show up, as well as the rest of the Cats.  This upcoming game promises not to disappoint.  Box score and recap.

Cats Defeat Eagles
Posted by Al on December 08, 2004
What was a slow start for Kentucky ended up being a blowout as Kentucky defeated Morehead State, 71-40.  Kentucky just led Morehead 29-23 at the half, but scored 20 unanswered points to open up the second half.  It took Kentucky until the second half to hit a 3, keeping their consecutive game streak with a 3- pointer alive.  They finished just 3 for 18 behind the arc.  This game looked much better in the rebound and officiating departments.  Kentucky will take on Indiana this Saturday at 1:30 in Louisville.  To read more about today’s game, visit UK Athletics.com.  Box score.

UK – UNC

I would just like to congratulate North Carolina and the referees for today’s win.  I have this theory that the referees thought they were at a UK-Duke game today.  I would also like to add I’m sure those of you that think the calls didn’t affect the outcome of this game also believe Bonds when he says he didn’t take, or didn’t know he was taking steroids.  If you can’t tell, UK lost 91-78 today.  Well, the next game is Wednesday against Morehead State.  Good game today Cats, even though you were thoroughly demolished by the refs.  Box score and recap.

Late Update
Posted by Al on November 29, 2004
Sorry to all those who were checking the site, biting their fingernails just waiting for an update.. you know who you are.  Anyway, Kentucky took care of Georgia State the other night, defeating them 77-59.  UK was well on their way to a 50 point crushing, but gave up a few too many 3′s to somewhat let Georgia State back in it.  They will need to guard the 3 a little better if they are going to survive the game on December 4th.  But,  for now they need to be focusing on Tennessee Tech this Tuesday night.  For now, read about the game and see the box score at UK Athletics.com.

Cats Eventually Handle Ball State
Posted by Al on November 23, 2004
After a slow start tonight, Kentucky finally got it together and took care of Ball State in the second half.  The score was tied 29-29 at halftime, but Kentucky poured in 44 points in the second half to win 73-53.  Patrick Sparks led the Cats with 20 points and Chuck Hayes, Randolph Morris, and Shagari Alleyne each added 10 points.  Shagari definitely stepped it up tonight playing like a 7-footer should, throwing down several dunks.  Remember to watch the tape delay tonight if you’re in the area.  If not, read up on the game and check out the box score at UKAthletics.com.

There’s also a nice article on CNNSI.com.  It starts off talking about Rondo, which may explain one Louisville fans question at the bottom of the first page, “who cares?”

The sophomore from Montreal, Quebec, will not be available when the team begins practice Oct. 16, but should return to basketball activity in 4-6 weeks.”  Read more on UKAthletics.com.

“Coach K” Offered Laker Job
Posted by Al on July 01, 2004
It’s not UK news, and will not help UK in anyway (directly anyway), but the Lakers offered Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski their head coaching job.  Will he take it?  I hope he does what’s best for him and his family…  whatever.  I couldn’t get through the whole sentence.  Take the job and leave the college ranks.  Your “recruiting” methods are more suited for the pro leagues where it’s smiled upon to shower the players with money and gifts.  Link to ESPN.com.

Kentucky Basketball Articles
Posted by Al on May 14, 2004
Here are a some good articles from ESPN.  First, Pat Forde tells us about Kentucky’s gains and Louisville’s losses in recruiting.  Second, we have Dick Vitale with a quickie on the top recruiting classes.  Next, Andy Katz has an older article on Patrick Sparks.  Also, here is a recruiting update from Bill Hodge.  All are nice articles in my opinion (I wonder why), and deserve a look.  And finally, as an added bonus, if you act now, an article on Rick Pitino’s recruiting woes.  Enjoy.

Vitale on Morris

Morris The Cat
Posted by Al on May 06, 2004
Randolph Morris made it official today making the announcement that he will be playing for UK.  Morris pulled some trickery when he said he was entering his name into the NBA draft.  He then proceeded to pretend to he was about to make a GT announcement, but finally stated he would, in fact, be going to Kentucky.  Whew.  Welcome aboard, Morris.

It’s Morris Day
Posted by Al on May 06, 2004
Today is the day UK and GT fans have been waiting for.  Randolph Morris will make an announcement tonight at 6 PM about what school he will be attending.  Early sources, namely Wildcat Faithful, have stated that Morris will announce he is going to attend Kentucky.  However, it is not over until his name is signed on the dotted line.  Regardless of the early postings, I personally am not going to hold my breath.  I will, however, be listening to the announcement in anticipation.  I believe 630 WLAP will be carrying the press conference live at 6.  You can listen online at WLAP.com.

Cote Leaving UK
Posted by Al on May 05, 2004
Well, I just got home and found that is has been reported that Cote will be leaving UK.  Tubby says it is a surprise to them, but it comes as no surprise to some people since it has been heavily rumored that SOMEONE would be leaving UK to free up a scholarship.  It’s a shame to see Cote go, he was one of my favorites from the past couple of years.  I just hope this means more good news for UK.

In other basketball news, UK may be having a two year series with Kansas.  The discussions are still in the early phases, however.  For more on the story, visit Kentucky.com.

5/8 Rule Gone, Morris Sets Date
Posted by Al on April 30, 2004
The 5/8 rule has been rescinded.  Instead, the NCAA will punish schools for poor athletic academic performance.  In somewhat related news, Randolph Morris has announced that he will make his decision on May 6th.  I’m sure the news about the 5/8 rule could only help Kentucky in this race.  I will post his decision here as soon as possible.  In the mean time, Kentucky.com has more information on the 5/8 rule news.

Rondo and Crawford Official, 5/8 Rule News
Posted by Al on April 20, 2004
More good news from the Bluegrass.  Rajon Rondo and Joe Crawford made it official by signing their letters of intent.  They are now true-blue Wildcats.  In addition, the 5/8 rule could be on its way out.  The NCAA Division I Management Council made a unanimous vote to rid the world of the rule.  WKYT.com has the story.

Williams to Prep
Posted by Al on April 14, 2004
It’s official.  Adam Williams is going to attend a prep school for a year to allow UK to stay within the 5/8 rule.  Williams will probably be attending Fork Union Military Academy for a season.  With this new bit of information, in my opinion, UK could be even closer to signing Morris.  If the “interpretation” holds, this would open up 1 more scholarship for said big man.  We just have to wait and see.  As for the Williams story, read more on Kentucky.com.

Is Today the Day?

Duke COLLAPSES
Posted by Al on April 03, 2004
This is the only good news I have at the moment.  After getting up by 8 with about 3:30 left in the game, Duke blows the lead and loses 79-78.  Oh happy day.  Kentucky may have lost, but at least we do not have to endure an all ACC final.  I don’t have to boycott CBS now. :)   Read all about it on ESPN.com, and Alameda Times-Star.

Well, Well, What a Surprise :o
Posted by Al on April 02, 2004
Shortly after Dan Wetzel brings up the favoritism the NCAA was seemingly showing Duke for their scandal, the NCAA announces that Duke will not be punished for the obvious infractions.  Their excuse?  Basically the NCAA claims Maggette nor Duke knew of the violation.  Can I get a big WHAT EVER?  The media can claim Duke has a “squeaky clean” program, but combine this with the hiring of player’s parents, and anyone with half a brain knows.  Read the disgusting articles on MercuryNews.com or IndyStar.com.

Duke Under Investigation? Not Likely.
Posted by Al on April 01, 2004
Corey Maggette was an ineligible player.  It’s as simple as that.  He admitted to receiving money from Myron Piggie before entering college.  This would negate his amateur status, therefore making him an ineligible player.  But apparently the NCAA doesn’t understand that, or fails to see it.  It has been almost 4 years since Maggette admitted the violation, and 7 years since the violation took place.  And yes, it is a violation.  Dan Wetzel tells us all we need to know on Yahoo.com.  Read it.  Unless you’re a Duke fan, you may feel enraged.  It is now time for the NCAA to step up, admit it’s wrong for delaying action, and to take said action.  Will it happen?  I doubt it, but who knows?

Kansas Destroys UAB

SEC Ring Not For Sale
Posted by Al on March 25, 2004
Fans were buzzing when word broke about an SEC Championship ring for sale on EBay.  Some thought it was fake, while some thought stolen.  It turns out the ring was offered for sale was legitimate, and by Cliff himself.  However, the listing was ended and no sale was made.  Hawkins posted a message on WildcatFaithful.com apologizing for his actions.

This Makes More Sense
Posted by Al on March 25, 2004
There was something interesting reported by USAToday in a story on the UAB victory.  The story reported that Nolan Richardson acted as a second coach from the stands.  Ok, that’s fine.  BUT, apparently Richardson attended the Kentucky practice the day before the game.  Hmmm.   Richardson, however, denies there was any assistant coaching on his part.  Read Richardson’s denial on Kentucky.com.  If there was anything shady going on, it’s time to admit it.  I guess we will get a better idea when UAB plays Kansas.  Unless Richardson attended a Kansas practice recently.

SEC Tournament Champs Once Again
Posted by Al on March 14, 2004
Kentucky had no problem taking care of Florida today, beating them 89 to 73, to win another SEC Championship.  Chuck Hayes had a career high 23 points and 8 assist to lead the Cats to the victory.  Fitch and Azubuike each pitched in 18.  The only thing left to do now is wait until 6:00 tonight and see where the Cats will be ranked.  A #1 is likely, but can they pull off an overall #1?  Tune into CBS tonight to see.  For the time being, check out the box score from today’s game on ESPN.com.

UK Advances To SEC Final
Posted by Al on March 13, 2004
With a 78-63 win over South Carolina today, Kentucky moves into the finals of the SEC Tournament to face Florida at 1:00 PM tomorrow.  Daniels and Fitch both had huge games for the Cats.  Fitch, who scored 24 points, put the exclamation on the win with a break away left handed dunk with 49.7 seconds left.    Excellent game, Cats.  Now, relax, watch the Florida/Vandy game, and get prepared for tomorrow.  Recap at UKAthletics.com.

Third Time’s… Well, You Know
Posted by Al on March 12, 2004
*Note: A similar heading will be pasted all over newspapers tomorrow.

Cliff Hawkins stepped up big-time and scored 23 points to help his Wildcats to the victory over Georgia today, 69-60.  The Bulldogs didn’t go quietly though, going on a 10-0 run late in the game.  It wasn’t enough, however, as the Bulldogs couldn’t become the first team to win 3 in a season against Kentucky since Tennessee did it in 1979.  Kentucky will play South Carolina tomorrow.  For more on today’s game, visit UKAthletics.com.

A Rematch… Again

With a win today, Georgia earned another shot at the Cats  For those of you who do not know, Georgia defeated the Wildcats in their two meetings.  Maybe it’s the Wildcat fan in me, or the week old pizza, but I think UK will come out on top with a win this time.  My bold prediction goes as 85-69.  Make me proud.

SEC Tournament

Cats Claw Gators Eyes Out

I used the same heading last year, and it remains true today.  Fitch continued his hot shooting, scoring 21 points to lead the Cats to a 82-62 routing.  Kentucky dominated on the boards out rebounding Florida by a 53 to 26 margin.  The Seniors end the regular season in a big way and head into the SEC Tournament with a #1 seed.  Great game, and keep up the good work.  Read more at UKAthletics.com.

That’s More Like It

All is right in the basketball world tonight.  Duke lost to Georgia Tech, 76-68.  This loss by Duke snaps their 41-game home winning streak.  Nope, no home cooking there.  Top experts expect Duke to move up to #2 in next weeks polls.  My High School alma mater, Allen Central, won their game tonight, defeating arch rival Betsy Layne.  And, of course, Kentucky dominated South Carolina by a score of 84-65.  It’s a great feeling when your team can let their opponent go on a 12-0 run and still be able to blow them out.  I’m liking this lineup.  They have been getting plenty of production from the bench lately, especially with Fitch being part of that crew.  I look for the bench to step up and be a huge factor during the SEC Tournament and into the NCAAs.  But anyway, I’m rambling.  Check out the summary at ESPN.com.

Oh, and btw, Bonds was given steroids!  Do you actually think he didn’t use them?  He’s a CHEATER! :)   More on this from ESPN.com.

Kentucky defeated LSU today, 70 to 64.  Gerald Fitch came off the bench to score a game high 23 points with 5 three’s.  If that’s how he’s going to play with a hurt finger, I hope it never gets better.  With this win, Kentucky clinched the SEC East title.  Good game, Cats.  UKAthletics.com has the recap.

UK Wins, 92-60

All the starters scored in double-figures tonight and defeated the Vols by 32.  Azubuike led the team with 17 points, but Barbour was right on his heels with 16 of his own.  The Cats were hot from beyond the arch hitting 58% of their three’s.  The bench helped contribute again with 18 points.  The bench play is coming around at the right time for the Cats with just 3 games left before the start of postseason play.  Read more about the game at UKAthletics.com.

Message To Boosters
Posted by Al on February 23, 2004
I was reading some messages this morning and found something interesting.  It seems that any UK fan is considered a booster.  Therefore, speaking directly with a high school athlete that is being recruited by UK is a NCAA violation.  Seems pretty silly, but it’s true.  From what I read, asking for an autograph is even crossing the line.  So be careful when around high school recruits.

Kentucky Steady At #9
Posted by Al on February 23, 2004
UK stayed steady at #9 in this weeks AP poll.  The Coaches Poll has yet to be released, but they are expected to maintain their position there also.  A few notables, Duke drops from #3 to #5, Miss. State drops from #4 to #7, Louisville fell off a cliff going from #10 to #21, and Gonzaga jumps from #6 to #4, their highest ranking ever.  Read more about this weeks rankings at CnnSI.com.

UK Embarrassed by UGA 72 to 68
Posted by Al on February 14, 2004
In a pathetic attempt to defeat an inferior team today, Kentucky, like teams of a couple years ago, played down to their opponent and got walked all over.  I’m not going to sugar coat it, when they play horribly, I say they play horribly.  If the players can’t get up for a game against a team that defeated them earlier in the year, they need to lose.  Time to work on the ball handling.  And Hayes, lay-up drills for you for an hour or two next practice.  Recap on CBS.Sportsline.com.

Barbour Has Big Game, UK Wins 66-55
Posted by Al on February 10, 2004
Antwain Barbour scored a career high 23 points tonight to propel the Cats to the win.  Barbour tied his previous career high, 13, by scoring UK’s first 13 points of the game.  Cliff Hawkins had 13, and Chuck Hayes added 12 points in the win.  Sheray Thomas also pitched in 4 points, most notably a monster slam on an assist from Hayes.  Visit UKAthletics.com for the recap and box score.

Cats Hang On By A Toenail
Posted by Al on February 07, 2004
It was Antwain Barbour who stepped up this game and completed a 3-point play to help Kentucky to a 65-64 win.  South Carolina had a chance to win when UK turned the ball over with 22 seconds left in the game.  But stellar defense forced South Carolina to call a timeout with 4 seconds left.  The final shot of the game was forced up over Daniels.  It appeared to be online, but hit the side of the backboard.  The Cats improve to 16 and 3 on the season and move into first place in the SEC East with that win.  Read more about the game at UKAthletics.com.

Kentucky Claws Back to Top Florida
Posted by Al on February 03, 2004
Kentucky made it five straight against Florida tonight as the Cats defeated the Gators, 68-65.  Kentucky had a double-digit lead, but let it slip away and got behind by double-digits to Florida.  However, the Cats didn’t get down, turned up the “D”, and made their way back to the top.  Two of the biggest plays occurred when the ball found it’s way to Azubuike on the wing and he calmly nailed a 3.  Then, down 1 point, Hawkins made a steal on a cross court pass and laid it in for the lead for good.  Daniels led the team with 22 points.  The Cats had only 9 turnovers in the win.  Read more about it on UKAthletics.com.

UK #5

Kentucky leapfrogged from #9 to #5 in the AP this week after Connecticut, Cincinnati, North Carolina, and Pittsburgh all lost.  The Coaches poll is yet to be releases, but UK is expected to be #5 in it as well.  Both 1 spot behind in-state rival Louisville.  AP Poll on SI.com.

UK Gets Big Verbal Commitment
Posted by Al on January 26, 2004
Kentucky got an unofficial commitment from Oak Hill Academy Rajon Rondo.  Rondo chose the Cats over, guess who, Louisville.  Rondo is a 6-3 point guard and said to be in the top ten point guards in the country.  I’ve not heard much of Rondo, but I’m keeping my hopes up he’s not another Rashaad Carruth.  Here’s a little more on it from Kentucky.com.  Rondo joins Ramel Bradley, Adam Williams, and Patrick Sparks (a transfer) in commitments for next years team.  It looks like it’s shaping up to be a good future for the Cats.

Kentucky Pulls Out A Squeaker
Posted by Al on January 20, 2004
Why changed the heading?  It saves me time.  To our visitor, you may have noticed I haven’t updated lately.  Well, that’s because there’s not been much going on.  UK got humiliated by UGA in Rupp.  And then let’s a 16 point lead over Tennessee slip away and almost blows it in OT.  What’s the problem?  I have no idea.  However, I’m sure launching up 3′s all the time isn’t the answer, especially when you’ve gone cold.  But that’s why I’m not Tubby, and Tubby is.  You heard me.  For the slow at heart, Tubby = UK Coach, not me or anyone else.  To catch up, here are some links:

Kentucky Pulls Out A Squeaker
Posted by Al on January 13, 2004
Kentucky pulled out another signature win tonight for their 21st SEC win in a row.  Well, signature for this season.  UK was up huge on the Bulldogs, but let the lead slip away in the closing minutes.  However, with just 2.5 seconds left, UK down by 1, Cliff Hawkins in bounded the ball from the sidelines to underneath the basket.  The ball was tipped away from Chuck Hayes, but was laid in by Jeff Brassow, I mean, Erik Daniels at the buzzer for a 67-66 victory.  Way to pull it out, Cats.  Hopefully they’ll be able to learn from this game and see what needs to be done to keep the lead.  But in the mean time, check out the game summary on UKAthletics.com.

Also for your reading pleasure is a nice article from ESPN.com, as suggested by Andrew.

Kentucky Tops Vanderbilt 75-63
Posted by Andrew on January 10, 2004
Kentucky managed to hold off a first half Vanderbilt run and come back victorious in tonight’s game.  Kentucky shot 54% and Daniels, Azubuike, and Fitch all contributed 16 points towards the win.  Cote came off the bench to contribute a big 7 points and 2 boards in the effort.  All in all, a good win for Kentucky and the 22nd win of the last 23 games for Kentucky against Vanderbilt!  Check out the box score from UKAthletics.com.

Kentucky Holds Off North Carolina
Posted by Al on January 03, 2004
It was a nail biter.  Right up until Fitch hit a huge 3 with the shot clock winding down.  The first half was ugly with the Cats down by 8 at the half, but Kentucky came out ready to play in the second half and outscored the Tar Heels 41 to 28 for a 61 – 56 win.  Our friends at UKAthletics.com provide us with the box score.

Server Changed

UK 56, UL 65

There’s no excuse for poor play (selfish play and asinine passes) and poor shooting.  I’ll sum it up in this equation:

34% FG + John Clougherty = UK loss.

UK Defeats EKU, 101 – 72

UK Destroys IU

Kentucky dominated the game today, holding Indiana to just 15 second half points for an 80-41 victory.  Chuck Hayes was the leading scorer for the Cats with 22, and Erik Daniels had a double-double.  Here are some stats from today’s game on ESPN.com.

UK #2 in AP, #1 in Coaches
Posted by Al on December 15, 2003
The AP poll is out and the Cats are ranked #2.  They were just 60 some votes behind Connecticut.  Kentucky has some unfriendly company at the top with Duke, UNC, and Georgia Tech. ranked 3, 4, and 5.  As expected, the Cats are ranked #1 in the Coaches poll after back-to-back Florida losses.  Congrats Cats!  Check out the Coaches poll and the AP poll on ESPN.com.

UK Defeats MSU, 79-74
Posted by Al on December 13, 2003
78,129 witnessed the Cats defeat the Spartans today in Detroit.  The crowd was a record for attendance to an NCAA basketball game.  Kentucky, after their dismal shooting at UCLA last week, shot 64% to MSU’s 43%.  UK moves to 5-0 on the season and will face Indiana in the RCA Dome next Saturday.   After Florida’s loss to Maryland and then again today to Louisville, Kentucky should find themselves in the #1 spot.  Good luck holding that ranking.  It has been nothing but a curse so far.  Read more about the game on UKAthletics.com and check out the box score on ESPN.com.

In a related story, the UK Women’s team lost to Temple in OT today, 86-82.  This drops them to .500 on the year and is their 2nd loss in a row.  They will be playing at Miami (Ohio) next Saturday at 2:00 P.M.  Good luck.  Read about today’s game on UKAthletics.com.

A Number One Bites the Dust

Do, do, do, a number one bites the dust.  Another one’s down, and another one’s down, a number one bites the dust.  Ok, enough of that.  Florida is the latest team to grab the ranking, then lose it almost immediately.  Here’s to hoping UK can hold off MSU at the “BasketBowl” and try their hand at being #1.  For anyone who is interested, here is a recap of the Maryland win on ESPN.com.  Oh, and Louisville was able to barely hold off Seton Hall for a 78 – 71 win.  It was closer than it looks toward the end.  Seton Hall had the ball 3 down but was unable to convert.  Here’s the game log from that game, also on ESPN.com.

The new polls are out.  Florida is #1 in both polls, but it seems the writers and coaches can’t agree on where UK belongs.  Coaches say #2, AP says #8.  It’s really still too early to tell.  But the next few weeks will definitely be interesting.  Good luck Saturday Cats.  Check out the Coaches and the AP polls on ESPN.com.

UK 52, UCLA 50
Posted by Al on December 06, 2003
It was ugly, the officiating was bad, Billy Packer was horrible, UK shot only 27%, but managed to scrape and claw to pull out a win at UCLA today.  Daniels had 14 points and Cliff Hawkins added 12 to help UK to the victory.  UK is going to have to do better than this if they want to have a chance in Detroit next Saturday against Michigan State.  Read about today’s game at UKAthletics.com.

The Kentucky Women team was able to outlast Louisville in Rupp Arena tonight, 84-80.  UK had a 14 point lead going into the half, but let it slip away.  Check out the box score and play by play at UKAthletics.com.  One down, one to go. :)

UK 89, Marshall 76
Posted by Al on December 01, 2003
Well, the Cats managed to hang on and win this one despite it getting ugly, fast.  Marshall hit 10 3 pointers in the game, but couldn’t hold off the run of Gerald Fitch and the Cats.  Marshall pulled within six, before UK ended up pulling away.  Fitch led the team with 24 points, after scoring his career high 36 against Tennessee Tech.  Azubuike, the Cat of the future, pitched in 16, and “E-Diddy” added 14 of his own in front of his hometown crowd to help with the victory.  Next up is UCLA in Anaheim.  This one should be a good game for basketball fans.  Good luck Saturday Cats.  For more information on the game against Marshall, visit UKAthletics.com.

UK #3, #9
Posted by Al on December 01, 2003
Don’t ask me, because I’m not sure, but UK is ranked #3 in the Coaches Poll and #9 in the AP.  They did get 1 first place vote in the AP though.  But anyway, rankings do not really matter at this point in  the season.  UK takes on Marshall tonight in Cincinnati.  I haven’t heard much about Marshall except that they beat Morehead State.  Good luck Cats!

Duke Goes Down
Posted by Al on November 30, 2003
Duke came unprepared for Purdue and saw their chances for an undefeated season end quickly as they were on the losing side of the scoreboard, 78-68.  GoDuke.com provides the box score for us today.

On a related note, #16 Louisville lost to Iowa in overtime, 70-69.  Box score on ESPN.com.  Recap.

On another note, I didn’t make mention of this before, but #1 UConn lost to Georgia Tech., 77-61.  Box score on ESPN.com.

UK Dominates Tennessee Tech.
Posted by Al on November 28, 2003
Gerald Fitch put it to Tennessee Tech. and scored a career high 36 points tonight as the Cats defeated the Golden Eagles 108 to 81.  In total, the starters contributed 99 of the 108 points.  The bench needs to get to work if they’re going to survive the upcoming gauntlet of Saturdays.  Great job tonight Cats.  Keep up the good work.  Now, for the recap from UKAthletics.com.

UK Women 2-0
Posted by Al on November 24, 2003
The “DeMoss” era has begun.  The UK Women’s team has started the season 2-0 with wins against IUPUI and Northwestern.   Here’s the recap from the Northwestern game.  Their next game is Tuesday against North Carolina.  Good luck Cats!

UK Loses to Georgia 30-10
Posted by Al on November 22, 2003
The score may indicate a close game, but it seems as the the Georgia offense got the big play at will.  The Wildcats blew several opportunities to get back into the game.  They now must face Tennessee at home, with no chance of going to a bowl game.  This brings up an interesting situation.  Will the Cats play their heart out trying to win a big game at home to save some face?  Or will they lay down for the Volunteers like in the Vanderbilt game (or last year against the Vols)?  Anyway, here’s the take on the game from UKAthletics.com

UK Defeats Winthrop
Posted by Al on November 21, 2003
Although part of the first half was close, Kentucky ended up beating Winthrop handily, 65-44.  Gerald Fitch started out slow but, along with Chuck Hayes, added 12 points.  Erik Daniels led the team with 15.  As always, here’s the recap from UKAthletics.com.

Slip of the Tongue, or the Truth?
Posted by Al on November 20, 2003
This just came to my attention today while reading a message board.  One particular poster pointed out an actual quote from the horses mouth, Mr. Dick Vitale himself.  He says, and I quote, “And coach Mike Krzyzewski has bought in a blue-chip, multi-skilled freshman: Loul Deng.”  Freudian slip?  After all, Dick Vitale is, to steal a phrase from Bobby Heenan, a broadcast journalist.  He would know, right?  Check out the quote on ESPN.com.  At least, until they fix it.  Scroll down to the Duke question, 4th paragraph, 6th word.  I know what he meant… or do I? :)

Vandy Humiliates UK
Posted by Al on November 18, 2003
I’m not much of a football fan, can you tell?  UK blew a must win against Vanderbilt this past Saturday.  Now they must win against Georgia and Tennessee to be eligible for a bowl.  Call me crazy, but it looks like the season is going to end soon for the football Cats.  At least basketball season is about to start.  For anyone that’s interested, here are the stats from Saturday’s game on UKAthletics.com.

Updates
Posted by Al on November 14, 2003
Well, I had posted updates, but apparently either I messed up, or the server reverted back to an old file.  At any rate, even though it was close throughout the first half of each game, UK easily handles Team Nike (107-89) and EA Sports (94-61) to go 2-0 in their exhibition games.  Click the teams name for their respective box scores.  The UK football team plays Vanderbilt tomorrow at 2:00 PM.  However, it appears the game will be shown on a delayed basis.  I guess it’s radio for everyone.  The basketball Cats open their season next Friday at 8:00 PM against Winthrop.  Guess what?  It’s being shown on a delay as well.  Oh well.  Good luck to all the Cats teams!

More Updates
Posted by Al on October 26, 2003
Unless you have been living under a rock, or relying solely on this site for your UK updates, you probably know that UK beat Ohio and Mississippi State.  Abney tied an NCAA record Saturday with his 8th return for a touchdown.  UK came from 17 down to demolish Mississippi State 42-17.

The Blue White scrimmage was also Saturday.  It ended in a 77-77 tie.  Check out the stats on UKAthletics.com.

South Carolina and Midnight Madness
Posted by Al on October 18, 2003
I have been lazy the past few days and have neglected updates to the site.  UK gave it a shot, but came up short against South Carolina.  But that doesn’t matter because Midnight Madness was last night/this morning.  To me, the Cats were looking pretty sharp.  The two 7-footers showed some promise.  But of course it’s impossible to tell how the season will go from the first practice, and the first few games for that matter.  Just look at last season.  Surely we haven’t forgotten.  Anyway, here are some photos on UKAthletics.com from last night’s practice, themed “The Future of Kentucky Basketball.”

Gators Win, 24-21
Posted by Al on September 27, 2003
The Cats were looking good until asinine passes and penalties took over.  It was an improvement though.  Let’s just hope this is an indication of how well the Cats will play the rest of the season (barring the penalties and such).  Read about the game on Espn.com.

Cats Begin Perennial Beating Of Hoosiers
Posted by Andrew on September 24, 2003
UK took out their post-Alabama frustration on the Indiana Hoosiers, beating them 34-17 on Saturday. Perhaps I’m delusional, but maybe the Cats can gather enough chutzpah to put up a fight against a very good Florida team this coming Saturday. Let’s all pray.

Finally, an Update
Posted by Alon September 15, 2003
Well, UK lost to Louisville, beat Murray State, and lost to Alabama in a horribly officiated game.  Their next game will be Saturday at Indiana.  Hopefully the refs will be a little better this time.

Tubby Staying Put
Posted by Al
Sorry anti-Tubby “fans”, it looks like the Tubster is in Kentucky to stay.  Apparently, the 76ers were interested in having Tubby as their coach, but Tubby turns out to be more loyal than a lot of UK “fans” and said he has no interest.  Read more about the story as reported by WLEX.

UK Signs Two Seven-Footers

Fitch and Azubuike to Colorado

Tubby Renews Contract
Sorry, I forgot to post this, but for anyone who doesn’t know already, Tubby has extended his contract with UK.  So for all you people who do not like Tubby, get used to him, he’s here to stay.

Good Job, Tubby
Posted by Al on March 29, 2003
Well, it didn’t end with a National Championship, but it did include a 26 game winning streak, a SEC regular season title, a SEC Championship, a regular season #1 ranking, and an Elite 8 appearance.  Tubby did a great job turning that group of players into a team.  Hopefully he’ll hang around and do that with next years players.  An Elite 8 or even a Final Four run is definitely within reach with all the talent UK is going to have.  One more year, Estill!  Good job on the season Cats.  It only takes one bad game in the tournament to have you looking to next season.

A Couple of Notes
Posted by Al on March 27, 2003
On this day in 1978, UK beat Duke for the NCAA Championship.  And on this day in 2003, Duke loses to KU (Kansas), 69-65.  Coincidence?  Probably.  Also, I just want to say that if Kentucky doesn’t make it 27 wins in a row, I consider this a great season.  A regular season SEC Title, winners of the SEC Tournament, and 26 wins in a row is pretty good.  But just to be on the safe side, beat Marquette Saturday.

Kentucky Survives Scare
Posted by Al on March 27, 2003
It was close… too close.  Kentucky managed to pull out the 63-57 win without one of their best players.  Keith Bogans went down in the first half with a high ankle sprain.  He sat out the entire second half and could be out for Saturday’s game.  I’ll keep everyone updated on his status when I hear something.  UK will play the winner between Marquette and Pittsburgh.  Also, while I’m thinking about it, is anyone else getting annoyed with CBS going to a commercial every chance they get?  I guess they have to exploit the college players as much as possible.  Anyway, that’s 26 in a row for the Cats.  26 down, 3 to go.  Keep it up!

Utah – 54 Kentucky – 75
Posted by Al on March 23, 2003
Well, for the billionth time, Kentucky beat Utah in the NCAA Tournament.  Bogans and Estill led the Cats with 18 points each.  I’m running out of things to say.  UK did just win their 25th game in a row.  Once the box score becomes available, I’ll post a link.

UK Rolls Over IUPUI
Posted by Al on March 21, 2003
IUPUI came into the game saying they were going to knock off UK, saying that UK was looking past them.  Well, maybe they were right, but they still got stomped.  UK dominated pretty much the whole game and beat IUPUI 95-64.  On a side note, that was the largest margin of victory and most points scored so far in the tournament.  Fitch tied his career high and led the team with 25 points while hitting 10 of 13 shots, 5 of 7 from 3-point range.  Bogans, Estill, and Hawkins each added 13 points.  Some bench players even got in the game.  Carrier added a 3, then reminded everyone why he sits the bench by trying to be fancy and making a turnover.  It was a nice pass right to the IUPUI player though.  UK will play Utah for the billionth time in the past 10 years on Sunday at 7.  The game might be carried by CBS unless they feel the need to show us more stuff exploding.  Until that time, check out the box score from the victory over IUPUI.

UK Gets Well Deserved #1 Seed
Posted by Al on March 16, 2003
To no ones surprise, Kentucky received a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.  Also, Kentucky finished the season #1 in the polls for a record setting 8th time.  UK is scheduled to play IUPUI unless the stadium gets nuked or something.  With the declaration of war, it’s doubtful that the game will be on CBS.  So keep checking your local listings for the game.  If I find out anything, it will be posted here.

KENTUCKY SEC TOURNAMENT CHAMPS!
Posted by Al on March 16, 2003
It was somewhat sloppy and nerve-racking, but Kentucky became the first team since 1956 to go undefeated in SEC play and win the SEC Tournament.  The last team to do it?  The Kentucky Wildcats.  With this 64-57 win, Kentucky clinches the #1 position in the final poll of the season and *should* clinch the overall #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.  Bogans, who led the team with 22 points, helped propel the Wildcats to their 23rd straight win.  So much for Deja Blue©.  I’m not disappointed, is anyone else?

Deja Blue©!
Posted by Al on March 15, 2003
Kentucky’s win over Auburn sets up a rematch of the 1996 SEC Title game against Mississippi State.  If that’s not enough for you, Kentucky was also undefeated in the SEC that year.  Mississippi State ended up winning that game, but as we all know, Kentucky went on to become the National Champs.  Could history repeat itself?  I sure hope so (barring the loss to Mississippi State).  As for the game today, Eric Daniels gave everyone a scare as he punished the floor with the side of his body after a dunk.  He turned out to be ok and ended up scoring 17 points.  The Cats simply blew out Auburn in the second half to win 76-61.  Get a good nights sleep, Cats, tomorrow is a big day.

Vandy 63, UK 81
Posted by Al on March 14, 2003
I’m getting tired of writing about it, but UK beat Vanderbilt for the 3rd time this season.  I haven’t seen the box score yet, but I think Bogans led the team with 16 points and Camara added 13.  That’s 21 in a row for the Cats.  They’re well on their way to 29.  Kentucky will face the winner between Tennessee and Auburn, both victims of the “D” this season.

Arizona Loses; Vandy Wins
Posted by Al on March 13, 2003
Looks like it is UK’s chance to be #1.  But, they’re going to have to earn it.  With UCLA beating Arizona today, Kentucky can clinch the #1 spot with a run of the SEC Tourney.  But it will be no easy task.  Let’s just hope UK can keep up their scoring and tenacious defense and top the final poll before the NCAA’s.  On a related note, Vanderbilt beat Alabama tonight 82-69, and earned the chance to face Kentucky tomorrow night at 7:30.  Vandy will be looking for revenge after that humiliating loss at Rupp.  This will be no easy task, Kentucky, so be ready.  Go Cats!

UK Still #2
Posted by Al on March 12, 2003
I almost forgot.  Here is the tournament bracket for the SEC Tournament starting Thursday in Blue Orleans.  Go Cats!

UK Still #2
Posted by Al on March 10, 2003
Don’t you just love how the polls work?  Don’t get me wrong, I think #2 is a great ranking, but I just think it’s ridiculous that a team can only move from #1 after being beaten no matter how the teams below them are doing.  And speaking of ridiculous (asinine if you will), Florida drops 4 whole spots after losing to #2 Kentucky.  But, with the polls being the fair representations that they are, Duke only drops 2 spots after losing to UNC.  Would it really hurt the media so much to have Duke drop to a more appropriate #15, or maybe even #20?  I guess the media can only do so much though.  They won’t be able to help keep Duke in the tournament.  Although, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Duke ranked in the top 5 final poll after losing in the second round.

UNC Beats Duke
Posted by Al on March 9, 2003
UNC beat Duke 82-79 today.  I can’t be classy about it, so there’s not much to say except HAH!

Deja Blue©
Posted by Al on March 8, 2003
It wasn’t the best officiated game, but despite that, UK was able to come away with a 69-67 win today (although some Florida fans would have you believe the game was called in favor of UK).  Fitch had 18 points and Bogans pitched in 15 in his final regular season game of his college career.  Kentucky has now gone undefeated (16-0) in the toughest conference, the SEC.  The last time they went undefeated was in 1996, when they went on to win the national championship.  This, however, came with a loss in the SEC Tournament.  So, if UK does lose in the SEC Tournament, don’t be too down.  It could just be Deja Blue©.  But for now, good luck in Blue Orleans.

Take a look at the box score for this game.

UK Slaughters Vandy
Posted by Al on March 5, 2003
Kentucky wins 106-44.  There’s not a lot more to say about the game.  Kentucky just dominated from start to finish.  Daniels led with 20 points, Estill had 17, and Azubuike had 16 while going 6 for 6 from the field.  Congratulations go out to the seniors for a great career UK.  Check out the box score from the game.  That says it all.

UK 74- UGA 66
Posted by Al on March 2, 2003
Despite a horrendously called game, the Cats clawed and scratched their way to top Georgia 74-66.   Estill and Hayes led the team in scoring with 16 and 15 points respectively.  The Cats defense showed up again today and held Dogs to 38% shooting.  Don’t look now, but UK has won 18 straight and are a couple games away from running the table in the SEC.  Also, I wasn’t too far off with my prediction (see below) except that Daniels did not lead the team and only scored 3 points.  Maybe I’ll do this good with my NCAA tournament bracket.  Anyway, all in all, this was a good win.  The Cats have Florida coming up on the 8th of March, but hopefully they won’t overlook Vanderbilt this Wednesday.

My Personal Prediction
Posted by Al on March 2, 2003
I’m going to go out on a limb and post my personal predictions for today’s game.  I will say UK will top UGA 73 to 66.  I also think Daniels will lead the way with 17 points.  Don’t make me look like a fool, Cats.

UK Rocky Tops Tennessee
Posted by Al on Feb. 26, 2003
Despite a good shooting night from Tennessee (especially in the first half), Kentucky managed to come out on top 80 to 68.  Congrats go out to Keith Bogans.  Bogans is now 6th on the UK all-time scoring list.  Oh, by the way, UK has extended their nations best win streak to 17 games.  Next up is Georgia in Athens.  That one should be a barn burner.  Excellent game Cats.  Good luck on Sunday.

Miss. St. 62 – UK 70

The Wildcats were able to outlast #19 (ESPN) Mississippi State Sunday afternoon handing them their 6th loss on the season.  It wasn’t a cakewalk though.  Mississippi State cut a 19 point Kentucky lead down to 5 points in the second half.  Luckily, the defense stayed around until the offense decided to catch up and the Cats were able to extend their winning streak to 16 games.

For more info on the game, check out the box score (provided unknowingly by our friends at ESPN.com).

LSU 57 – UK 68
Posted by Al on Feb. 15, 2003
Kentucky extended the nations longest winning streak to 14 games today as they handed LSU their 9th loss of the season. The defense we have all come to love was there today, but not so much of the offense. Keith Bogans led they way with 20 points and Gerald Fitch pitched in 15 of his own as UK shot 39% (22 for 56). With the win today, and Louisville’s loss to St. Louis on Wednesday, UK should move into the #2 spot in the rankings on Monday. Next up for the Cats is Arkansas. Get refocused, Cats, and come out firing against the Razorbacks on Wednesday.

UGA 67 – UK 87

UK, again, comes ready to play with some suffocating defense and easily takes care of Georgia. That’s enough said on that matter for the moment. Lets all just sit back and enjoy this wonderful stomping of another ranked opponent.
