What can be better than Kentucky basketball in August? Well, that would be…
31 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 0 turnovers from Brandon Knight
3 dunks by Jon Hood
Monty Hardware
The game was definitely a learning experience. The teams were working no foul and no timeout restrictions (Chris Weber would have loved the latter). Too bad they weren’t under a no injury restriction or we might have seen more Terrence Jones.
Overall, it was a fun game to watch and accomplished many things. It allowed the freshman to get much needed real game experience. It gave them more exposure to Kentucky fans with fine programming on channels such as WKYT (which comically went to commercial right as Hood was about to leave his feet for his first dunk). And it gave the new players their first real taste of the little bit of craziness that is the Big Blue Nation with the gym resembling Memorial Coliseum during pre-Gillispie Blue-White games.
And we get to do it all again tonight. Monty Hardware won’t be around but we’ll still have Canadian correspondent Dominique Papa. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Update: Check out this article from a paper in Windsor.

What a Canadian camera might look like
Here comes an interesting story from Kentucky.com. Apparently WKYT is expecting the games in Canada to be in a not so high quality. Apparently all of Canada doesn’t have the right equipment to broadcast the game in the 16:9 format we’re now used to. But surely the broadcasts won’t be as bad as the Jefferson Pilot games used to be.

Brandon Banks of the Washington Redskins returned a punt for a touchdown against the Buffalo Bills. He celebrated by doing the Wall Dance.

Word on the street is that Anthony Davis Jr has committed to play basketball for the University of Kentucky. Davis joins Marquis Teague and Mike Gilchrist for the 2011 class. Gilchrist is currently ranked #1 in the class but many say Davis will take over that spot when the new rankings come out.
I guess we know why Quincy Miller is now a strong Louisville lean. It is highly probable that Kentucky cooled on Miller, a forward like Davis, when Davis was determined to be a Wildcat.
With this pickup, Kentucky has surely cemented the #1 class in the nation yet again. And the 201o season hasn’t even started yet.
Now let’s sit back, enjoy the moment, and laugh at all the UK200K accusations.
Update: Just found an ESPN article about the Anthony Davis commitment with quotes from Gilchrist and Teague.

We’re in a recession. Hey, here’s an idea, let’s raise ticket prices!
UK decided they’re going to raise basketball ticket prices (warning: Jerry Tipton link) $7 for next season. The people lucky (unlucky?) enough to have the best seats in the house will be paying a $5,000 “donation” to the K Fund instead of their normal $1,350. Hey, if they can afford $1,350, surely they can afford $5,000, right? If they can afford $5,000, why not $6,000, $7,000 or maybe $10,000? But I find it hard to feel too sorry for them.

Update: As reported, WLEX has confirmed Melvin Turpin did indeed commit suicide today. Turpin’s wife recently suffered a heart attack or stroke which likely compounded his problems. This is a surprise to everyone. I spoke with several of his neighbors. No one had any idea Turpin was contemplating or capable of such an act.
Former UK player Melvin Turpin has died. Early indications are he committed suicide. More details when they emerge.
This was the scene at his home earlier…

Rivals has a good story about Sim and Taveer Bhullar, a pair of 7+ foot tall brothers playing high school basketball. They just started recently (in the last few years) but are already showing flashes of brilliance. And yes, Kentucky has expressed interest in them.

Apparently Terrence Jones has made his decision. But we don’t know what the decision is just yet. From his twitter:
The moment is here 39 minutes ago via txt
On the line my name is 30 minutes ago via txt
So now, we wait…
On the line my name is.. what?
my name is.. who?
my name is.. T-te-te-terrence Jones
Update: According to Evan Daniels of Scout.com, Terrence Jones has picked… Kentucky! Let’s hope.
#TerrenceJonesWATCH is over. He’s (@terrencejones1) is headed to Kentucky. He signed financial aid, not LOI, according to Pat Strickland
So it appears UKBasketball09 or whatever your name is, was right. Terrence Jones has supposedly signed scholarship papers to attend Kentucky.
Not be be a Debbie Downer, but I don’t think there’s anything keeping him from signing scholarship papers to both schools. I would prefer to see him on campus, but this news is good enough for me for now.

From @UKCoachCalipari:
I want to address this with the Big Blue Nation one last time, I will be coaching at Kentucky next year. Now let’s finish what we started!
Honestly, I never thought he would be that direct.
